Hampshire Book Award 2013

The shortlist for this year’s Hampshire Book Award was announced last week. The criteria is that the book be in paperback, to have been published in 2012 and be suitable for a year 8 pupil to read.

The twelve year 8 student judges who will help decide the winner of this award, met with a librarian from the Schools Library Service and were shown the six shortlisted boooks. They will have fourteen weeks to read all six books and meetings will be arranged so that the books can be discussed. At the end of this period all the students will attend a discussion/voting event at Applemore School where they will discuss the books with other pupils taking part.  They will then be asked to vote for their favouite book and the overall winner will be announced.

Later in the year all the student judges will hopefully have the opportunity to witness the winning author receiving his/her award.

The shortlisted books are All Fall Down by Sally Nicholls, Department 19 by Will Hill, Gladiator by Simon Scarrow, My Sister lives on the Mantlepiece by Annabel Pitcher, Burn Mark by Laura Powell and Cracks by Caroline Green.

The books will only be available for the judges to read at the moment but there is a selection of previous winners and shortlisted titles available in the library.
